New Friends

Chapter 34

Reynoldsburg, Ohio

‘I’m Bree Adams. This here’s my sister, Jill.’

Bree didn’t feel intimidated by the three men who’d set up a camp in the shell of an old grocery wholesaler’s building in a suburb of Columbus called Reynoldsburg. The building had once been a five-story apartment block, but years ago had been converted to accommodate the wholesaler, the lowest floor being an open warehouse where the product was offloaded to delivery vans. The next floor up had been the sales area, and was divided into individual units by the erection of sheet-rock walls. They were in the warehouse, where there were enough windows to give a 360-degree view to the outside. The big one – Hulk – had chosen the building to use as their base for the night, selecting the semi-derelict structure as opposed to one of the more modern premises on the same street. His reasoning was that other survivors might already have taken shelter in the other blocks. Reading between the lines, Bree thought that the men had possibly experienced something bad the last time they shacked up with other people. She didn’t challenge his decision, because she felt he had a point. Thankfully all those that she and Jill had come in contact with had been good people, but there were plenty others out there who might view two vulnerable girls as easy targets. Even when they’d been cramped together in the close confines of the van cab she’d never felt threatened by any of the men’s closeness. Willingly she had gone into the building with them, Jill trailing her, and they’d set up in a cavernous stockroom at the rear of the warehouse. The men had got a pan of water on the boil, using old packing crates to feed the fire, and had also set some round as seats. The fire was near to an open window and the sucking draft pulled the smoke away from them and outside. The girls had joined them, waiting for the water to boil and the hope of a hot drink.

Jill didn’t appear intimidated either, but some of her shy awkwardness had returned, and Bree noticed the girl’s hand cover her mouth as she said hi. It was odd that her dishevelled hair, dust streaked face, and unkempt clothing didn’t concern her as much as did her dental brace. Perhaps it was because the men also looked a tad worse for wear after their own trials.

The big man offered introductions. ‘Call me Ruby or Rube, whatever. That there’s Jim…don’t believe a word he tells ya.’ Jim waved down Ruby’s taunt with a smile. ‘And the miserable looking one’s called Bill.’

Bill was holding a swatch of cloth to the wound he was tending on his shoulder. The rake had managed to swipe a claw through his jacket and shirt and found flesh beneath. Bill had pulled off both and stood Bruce Willis-like in a vest. The claws had left three parallel oozing grooves in his skin. ‘Like I’ve anything to look happy about.
